Update on Marina Incident 3.10.09

Over the past 7-weeks following the failure of the dock gate locking assemblies Maryport Developments Limited (MDL) have been working closely with experts to understand the full reasons for its failure following the extensive refurbishment earlier this year.

The messages of good will & support that staff and MDL as a whole have received from customers despite their own large losses following this major setback to us all have been very heartening, and our thanks go out to you for being so patient.

We have tried to pass on information to those on site as and when available but we are now trying to get information to everyone. We do apologise if you feel we could have communicated better, though hopefully we can now address this. To this end we are currently collating marina users e-mail addresses for us to provide current up-to-date information, when available. We would please ask you to email the Marina Office at enquiries@maryportmarina.com or lisa.eland@maryportmarina.com or anne.storey@maryportmarina.com to pass on your e-mail address. We are also posting information on our website at www.maryportmarina.com and on the marina notice board.

The latest information we have that we are able to pass on at this time is as follows:

· Marina users will have observed that the salvage operation relating to damaged pontoons and vessels is now complete, with the exception of the damaged piles, which remain in situe.

· A major operation as to the prevention of pollution was carried out at the time of the incident under the supervision of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and Environment Agency, which is now complete other than satisfying the requirements of Natural England in the formation of closure reports.

· On the 9th November Stobbarts commenced work to reinstate the concrete plinths that the dock gate locking systems were attached to.

· A new hydraulic winch motor has been ordered from the manufacturers due to excessive damage to the old one during the incident. It is a specialist motor and not easily available other than from the manufacturers, which has a 7 to 8 week lead-time for the delivery. Once the supplier has received the winch motor it can be fitted and we will be able to assess the gate fully.

· The new pontoons will be installed once the dock gates have been repaired.

Following the tragic events of the last week for the whole region with the unprecedented flooding, loss of road infrastructure & bridges we understand that some customers will not be able to access their boats easily. Please be rest assured that staff will continue to check vessels and wraps, although if you have any specific concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued support through these very difficult times for everyone in west Cumbria.
